What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are high-aesthetic restorations compared to common fillings used in cases of dental tissue loss, either due to decay or fracture.
The manufacturing process differs from that of fillings, and depending on the material used, they can be made from porcelain or composite resin.
They are placed on premolars and molars when a simple filling is not secure, but the damage is not extensive enough to require a crown. The main difference between onlays and inlays is that onlays cover a larger area of restoration than inlays.
Manufacturing and Placement Process
During the first visit, after local anesthesia, the preparation of the tooth begins. An impression is taken and sent to the laboratory along with the color shade for the manufacturing of the inlay or onlay.
A temporary restoration material is placed in the tooth.
During a second visit to our clinic, the inlay or onlay is checked in the mouth to ensure proper occlusion and contact with neighboring teeth, followed by the bonding of the restoration to the tooth.
