What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin, type A, is an active substance that relaxes muscles and temporarily eliminates their contractions. This results in the reduction of wrinkles that form in the skin due to underlying muscle contractions.
How is it Administered?
The application of botulinum toxin is done via injection using a fine needle, locally targeting the muscles we want to relax. The process is minimally painful for patients and takes about 20 minutes. The main areas of the face where the treatment can be applied include the forehead (for forehead and frown lines) and around the eyes (crow’s feet). Results begin to show after the fourth day post-application, with final results assessed around two weeks later, allowing for a possible follow-up treatment to correct any imperfections.
Are There Risks?
The medication acts locally and remains at the injection site. Application by a specialized doctor (plastic surgeon or dermatologist) minimizes side effects, which may include bruising at the injection site, a feeling of heaviness in the area, and slight local swelling. Recent international studies have shown that it is completely safe for health, even after long-term use, and effectively reduces facial wrinkles without causing distortions when administered by experienced professionals.
How Often Should Treatment be Repeated?
The effects of botulinum toxin on the muscles last approximately 4-6 months. This means that around six months after the treatment, the muscles’ ability to contract returns to its pre-treatment state without any further changes.
Will Stopping Treatment Make Wrinkles Worse?
With long-term use of botulinum toxin, facial wrinkles may return less intensely, and the skin can maintain some freshness even after the effects wear off.
What Age Should One Start Treatment?
There is no specific age to start the treatment. When wrinkles on the face begin to become permanent, and the doctor deems them treatable with botulinum toxin, the application can be made.
In Which Cases is it Contraindicated?
It is contraindicated for individuals with neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis. It is also advisable to avoid it in case of pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Post-Treatment Instructions for Botulinum Toxin
- Try to exercise your facial muscles for 2-3 hours post-treatment (e.g., frowning or raising your eyebrows). This helps the toxin act more quickly in the muscles. However, if you forget, it won’t negatively impact the final result.
- Avoid rubbing the treated areas for the next 24 hours.
- Do not use makeup for 4 hours after treatment.
- Avoid lying down or engaging in vigorous exercise for 4 hours after treatment.
- Stay away from hot showers, hairdryers, and excessive sun exposure for the next 2 days.
- You may experience small spots or redness, which will completely disappear within a few hours.
- Avoid taking aspirin and alcohol for 2 days after treatment. Limit intense exercise for 2 days post-application.
